Welcome to Bargoed Male Voice Choir's Offical Website

Bargoed is a valley town in South East Wales situated some 20 miles north of Cardiff.  The town was once a mining town but is now supported by various light industries.

Bargoed has always had a strong tradition of male choral singing.  The present choir was re-formed in 1961 under the baton of Alun John.  Since then the choir has been fortunate in having Musical Directors and Accompanists of outstanding ability, as well as positive guidance and encouragement from its President, Dr. Stuart Burrows.

As with most Welsh Choirs, Bargoed Choir has travelled extensively, with concerts in the USA, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland, czech republic as well as concerts throughout the United Kingdom.  There have been many television appearances, “This Is Your Life”, “Home on Sunday”, and many appearances on S4C.

The choir is also building a reputation for appearances at corporate events.  In the last few years the choir has entertained VIP guests for pre-dinner, during dinner and after-dinner at The Millennium Stadium, Gwernvale Manor, Cardiff City Hall and The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport.

Bargoed Choir is also renowned for entertaining congregations at weddings, with the result the choir is featured in many wedding photo albums.

Under the musical direction of Lionel Hughes, the choir has built up an extensive repertoire of traditional male choral items, operatic arias and modern light music to please all tastes of music.  The choir is also very fortunate in having the services of two young gifted accompanists, Johnathon Polson and his assistants Harriet Rees, both Johnathon and Harriet play the piano and violin.   Harriet is also an accomplished soloist.

The choir’s current success can be measured by its well-filled concert diary and for the number of repeat concerts that it does.  It is felt that this success is due to the choir’s ability to change its repertoire to suit every occasion and by the obvious enjoyment of singing shown by choristers.  The choir’s popularity has resulted in a recent influx of new young choristers, this recruitment bucks the general trend, with most other choirs reporting a gradual decline in numbers.

Bargoed Male Voice Choir can be proud of its history in choral singing and can look forward to many years of spreading enjoyment and culture.
